The Guess India 2023 report shows that one in three college students (32.5 per cent) in India are looking to start an independent venture. This is higher than the global average. The global figure is one in four (25.7 per cent).
"This is a recognition of the tremendous resources that the government has deployed to promote entrepreneurship from the highest level in the country. Strong entrepreneurial capacity and potential indicate huge growth, "said Puran Singh, associate professor and co-author of the report.
The Guess India 2023 report is based on responses collected from 13,896 students across 1,298 universities from November 2023 to February 2024. The Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students Survey (GUESSS) India Chapter is a research project involving student entrepreneurs from 57 countries.
The report also states that 14% of Indian students plan to enter entrepreneurship soon after graduation. However, students' interest in starting a business after five years of graduation has increased to 31.4 per cent. Attitudes seem to change over time.
