1.75 lakh startups registered in India, including 119 unicorns

The number of startups in India officially registered with the Department of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has crossed 1.75 lakh. The surge, fueled by government support, digital platforms like Bhaskar, and investor interest, is a testament to a thriving startup ecosystem.

Platforms like Bhaskar help over 5.5 lakh users, including founders, mentors, and investors. Meanwhile, government policy support plays a key role, with 187 startups recently receiving tax benefits under Section 80-IAC.

There are 119 unicorns in India, of which 50 are in Bengaluru. Consumer, enterprise, and retail startups dominate the list. This highlights the growing diversity of the ecosystem. While India has lagged behind the US and China in the number of unicorns, the rapid growth rate shows strong global potential.

With over 200 government schemes accessible through the Startup India portal and simplified regulatory criteria, India is well on its way to becoming a leading startup destination. Industry leaders and policymakers are now focusing on deeptech, reverse flipping and attracting talent from smaller cities.
