Amid fierce competition from AIs like DeepSeek and Grok 3, OpenAI's ChatGPT is standing tall with 400 million weekly users. This is a huge increase from 300 million users in December.
"The growth of ChatGPT is natural. More people are hearing about ChatGPT, trying it out, and finding it useful. They see their friends using ChatGPT, and they want to use it too," said Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer of OpenAI.
In addition to individuals, companies are also using ChatGPT. OpenAI already has about 2 million company users, a number that has doubled since September. Many employees start using ChatGPT personally and then ask their companies to use it as well. OpenAI’s users include major companies like Uber, Morgan Stanley, and T-Mobile.
The company’s developer community is also growing. More and more developers are using OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models to power their own apps and services. According to Lightcap, traffic from developers has doubled in six months, and usage of OpenAI’s advanced reasoning model, O3, has increased fivefold.
Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek made headlines in January. The day DeepSeek gained attention, Nvidia's stock fell 17%, wiping out $600 billion in value. OpenAI has accused DeepSeek of copying its models.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is also facing legal battles. Co-founder Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against the company over its move to a non-profit model. Musk tried to buy OpenAI's assets for about $100 billion, but OpenAI rejected the offer.
"The company is not changing its plans due to fierce competition in the AI sector. Artificial intelligence is as essential as cloud computing, and businesses cannot operate without it," he said.
Despite these challenges, OpenAI remains very strong.
