Delhi government to offer Rs 30,000 subsidy for electric vehicles

The Delhi government is planning to launch a new Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 to promote the use of EVs and reduce air pollution. As part of the scheme, people buying electric two-wheelers will get a subsidy of up to ₹30,000. If someone abandons a petrol two-wheeler that is more than 12 years old, they will get an additional ₹10,000.

Women are also being encouraged to switch to electric vehicles. The first 10,000 women with a valid driving license will get a subsidy of up to ₹36,000.

Electric three-wheelers, including autorickshaws and goods vehicles, will get a subsidy of up to ₹45,000. If old CNG autorickshaws are abandoned, they will get an additional ₹20,000, and if the CNG vehicle is more than 10 years old, they will get ₹1 lakh for replacing it.

The government plans to stop registering new CNG autorickshaws from August 15, 2025 and allow only electric autorickshaws. A similar ban has been proposed for registering petrol two-wheelers from August 2026.

The new policy also aims to set up 13,200 public charging points across the city, one every 5 km. The target is to make 95% of all new vehicles electric by 2027 and 98% by 2030. The MCD and Delhi Jal Board vehicles are also planned to be fully electric by 2027.

The policy supports the national PM e-Drive scheme and follows similar EV efforts by states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Electric vehicle registrations in Delhi are already on the rise, with over 85,000 registered in 2024, up from around 74,000 in 2023.
