NeuroPixel.AI, a Bengaluru-based startup that provided artificial intelligence-based services in the fashion e-commerce space, is shutting down after six years of operation. CEO Arvind Venugopal Nair said the decision was due to stiff competition from powerful AI models like Google's NanoBanana Pro and the dominance of large companies in the market. Despite having a low-cost technology, the startup was unable to compete with large companies in terms of supply chain and growth.
The financial crisis also contributed to the collapse. The loss of a major client and months of unpaid wages severely affected the company's operations. The company, which had collaborated with leading brands like Myntra and Fab India, has now stopped direct services altogether, although it is now considering the possibility of selling its patented technology. It had raised around $1.2 million in funding from investors including Flipkart Ventures.
Neuropixel’s shutdown is a reflection of a broader crisis facing AI startups in India. As giants like Google and Microsoft rapidly refine their AI models, it is becoming increasingly difficult for smaller startups that rely solely on them to survive. The lack of clear business models and growing investor concern are leading to the downfall of more companies in the space, such as Alle and subtl.ai.
