Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said that 50 percent of coding in companies is done by AI and students should be careful while choosing a career. More than 50% of coding jobs in many companies are now done by AI. Therefore, he said, students should learn to use artificial intelligence tools to survive in a job-prone future.
Altman said it is essential to learn AI to stay competitive in a changing job market. He believes that those with good knowledge in AI can benefit in the long run when it comes to switching to business automation.
The idea that AI will replace human coders is becoming increasingly popular. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicted that AI will generate up to 90 percent of code within six months. Kevin Weil, chief product officer of OpenAI, said that AI will surpass humans in coding by the end of this year. Altman noted that the role of AI in coding is already huge.
He mentioned the concept of "agentic coding." This is an advanced form of automation where AI takes on more coding responsibilities. He acknowledged that while the concept is still evolving, the current models need to be further improved before they reach that point.
He stressed the importance of developing the ability to learn new technologies and approaches rather than learning specific technology skills. Altman also indicated that in the future, the need for software engineers may decrease as AI becomes more efficient. While he acknowledged that engineers are currently in demand, he also predicted that the number of engineers needed may decrease as AI takes on more tasks. "Every software engineer can do more, but with time, we will have enough engineers," he said.
Altman explained that the loss of jobs due to AI does not happen suddenly, but gradually accelerates. He said that it is a process that starts slowly and affects small sectors and then spreads to industries more quickly.
