Amazon India to lay off 2,000 employees

Amazon India has laid off about 1,000 employees as part of a global restructuring plan, a number that could rise to 2,000. The layoffs are mainly affecting mid- to senior-level employees, with entire teams being eliminated in some departments. Another round of restructuring is expected in January.

The company said the layoffs are part of efforts to simplify the structure, reduce the number of employees, and focus more on key areas such as artificial intelligence (AI). Amazon has invested $8 billion in AI company Anthropic and is also developing its own AI models.

Amazon said it will support affected employees by offering severance pay, health insurance and other benefits, as well as a 90-day commitment to find new roles within the company. The company, which employs around 1.2 lakh people in India, recently reduced its financial losses in the country.
