Indian government confirms no plans to lift TikTok ban

The Indian government has confirmed that TikTok will not be returning and has no plans to lift the ban. The app, owned by China’s ByteDance, was temporarily banned in 2020 for security reasons and then permanently banned in 2021. Before the ban, India was TikTok’s biggest market with over 200 million users.

Other Chinese apps like Helo, Capcut and PUBG Mobile were also banned. Around the same time, India introduced new rules requiring government approval for investments from countries that share a border, making it harder for Chinese companies to invest in Indian startups.

TikTok’s website was recently accessible for a short time, and the government confirmed that the ban is still in place, although the company posted some job openings. Meanwhile, Indian and Chinese companies are seeking partnerships in electronics manufacturing to share technology and reduce costs.
