The Indian Railways has revised its catering policy to allow big food brands like McDonald's, KFC and Haldiram's to open outlets at railway stations. These brands will be part of a new category called premium brand catering outlets.
The space for these outlets will be allotted only through an e-auction system for a period of five years. They will be set up only at stations with sufficient space and high passenger demand. The existing reservation quotas for specific categories will remain unchanged.
With several stations being redeveloped across the country, the move will help improve food options for passengers. These premium brands will work in tandem with the existing railway food services and offer more choices, especially at major stations.
