Meta has reportedly laid off about 600 employees from its artificial intelligence (AI) division. The job cuts are mainly affecting the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team and the Superintelligence Labs, which work on AI and infrastructure projects.
Despite the layoffs, Meta’s new TBD lab is still hiring. The company said the reorganization aims to streamline decision-making and give employees more responsibility. Those who lost their jobs can apply for other positions at Meta.
Meta also recently hired former Apple engineering head Qiang Yang to bolster its AI team. Yang previously led a team working on search engines like ChatGPT for Siri, a sign of the growing competition for AI talent in Silicon Valley.
