Obscene content: Central government bans 5 more OTT platforms

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has banned five OTT platforms for allegedly broadcasting obscene content. The platforms banned are MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu. The government has the power to stop online services that spread such obscene content in violation of the IT Rules, 2021. The new action is based on this.

The central government has banned several OTT platforms in the past for similar reasons. The government had taken similar action against 25 platforms last July and 19 other platforms in 2024 after they did not comply with the law despite warnings. The action was taken against these platforms for showing excessive nudity and pornographic scenes.

The government is now aiming to bring stricter regulations on OTT platforms, just like it has for cinema and television. The government had informed the Supreme Court that new laws are under consideration to prevent objectionable content on OTT. In addition, the government has strictly instructed all platforms to strictly implement age-based access control to prevent children from viewing such content and to avoid pornographic content.
