80% of online orders come from villages: Meesho report

E-commerce platform Meesho said in its Smart Shopper Report that 80 per cent of Indian online shoppers are living in Tier II and Tier I cities.

"Tier II + cities more than doubled Tier I cities in orders for electronic accessories," the report stated. Nearly 40% of all orders came from the Northeast space, a region that has traditionally been difficult for brands and e-commerce to reach.

Among the top categories, the home and kitchen product categories witnessed 50% YoY growth with nearly 10% being reserved for this segment. On the basis of collections, the Home Improvement segment has witnessed an annual growth of 112%.

There was a surge in orders for products including Bluetooth headphones and earphones, power banks, smart speakers, screen magnifiers, and keyboards. The rise and popularity of influencer channels has fueled the demand for trending and viral products on the platform. With the boom of products like selfie sticks, ring lights, microphones and tripods, the growing traction for creating content has also been seen.

Among the top categories, beauty and personal care products, especially men's beauty products, were a big hit. Fashion, health and fitness have become very attractive categories.

Founded in 2015, Meesho raised $275 million in a funding round through primary and secondary share sales in May. According to media reports, the fund-raising is part of a larger round of funding ranging from $500 million to $600 million, which values the company at $3.9 billion.
