Bankruptcy proceedings against India's largest startup ed-tech giant Byjus, valued at $22 billion, could force thousands of employees out of a job and shut down its services altogether, its CEO said in a court filing.

Baijus, backed by investors such as Process and General Atlantic, has faced several setbacks in recent months, including job cuts, a fall in valuations and a spat with investors who accused CEO Baiju Ravindran of lapses in corporate governance. Baijus, however, reiterated that no wrongdoing was done.

Baijus faces its biggest crisis yet after an Indian tribunal opened bankruptcy proceedings this week following a complaint by the cricket board over $19 million in arrears related to a sponsorship deal. Baiju's assets were frozen and the board suspended.

The bankruptcy process would result in the declaration of default by vendors providing critical services to Byjus for the maintenance of its online platforms, which would "lead to total shutdown of services" and "disrupt" operations, Baiju Ravindran told the court in an appeal seeking to quash the bankruptcy process.

The filing added that Baiju Ravindran was ready to pay the dues owed to the Indian cricket board within 90 days, adding that the company's employees "will suffer ... and may be forced to leave the organization". Baijus has 27,000 employees including 16,000 teachers.
