Amid fierce competition in the online grocery market in India, BigBasket's losses have widened sharply. Although the company's consumer (B2C) revenue grew 7.7% to Rs 8,223 crore in FY26, its losses rose 66% to Rs 3,073 crore. Despite high demand among consumers, most companies in this sector are unable to make a profit.
BigBasket's losses increased so much after it completely shifted to the quick commerce sector in August 2024. It had to spend a lot of money on logistics, dark stores and discounts. When the B2B segment is included, the company's total revenue increased to Rs 10,521 crore from Rs 9,861 crore last year. But the combined loss of both the groups is Rs 3,175 crore.
Tata Digital, which owns 84.23 per cent of BigBasket, has also seen its overall loss increase from Rs 4,610 crore to Rs 4,974 crore. While its main competitor in this market, Zepto, has incurred a huge loss of Rs 5,905 crore, Blinkit, a leader in the quick commerce space, has earned an operating profit of Rs 102 crore in the first quarter of fiscal 2027.
