OpenAI's software engineering AI tool Codex has seen a 27x increase in users in India since the beginning of 2026. It also saw a 20x increase in daily interactions by the end of April. This rapid growth has transformed India from a mere consumer of technology to a major hub for AI activities globally. With this, India has also entered the list of top five countries in the world that use Codex the most.
Originally designed to convert natural language into computer code, the tool is now being used in India in a wide variety of ways, beyond just software development. More than a quarter (25%) of the total demand here is for non-coding purposes. Professionals across a range of fields are using the technology to condense complex information, prepare official documents and automate day-to-day research. This has made Codex a universal tool that makes everyday tasks easier.
Apart from software engineers, it is also being used by startup founders, business teams, researchers and students to bring ideas to life faster, according to OpenAI. As of February, its usage for coding purposes in India was three times the global average. Leading IT companies like TCS and Infosys, as well as fintech startup Razorpay, have already integrated the AI system into their operations to fuel this momentum.
